How long is too long when it comes to the timeline of buying a home?

Should it be 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months? In an ideal world a freehold sale should be 6 weeks and a leasehold sale of around 8-10 weeks - but this isn't always happening. We are finding that solicitors and surveyors are stretched and it can be a postcode lottery when it comes to the timescale to get local searches done. This interesting article in Zoopla talks to experts from around the industry, but the best course of action is to keep communicating with your local estate agent and solicitor. There are also things you can do yourself - have a solicitor in place and chase them when paperwork has changed hands; communicate your ideal timescale and completion date; keep talking to your estate agent and use their advice and knowledge and be as organised as possible!
