Slinfold is a very pretty village with some fine Georgian houses and stands near the River Arun approximately four miles north west of Horsham. The Roman Stane Street goes right through the parish and main thoroughfare of the village is simply called “The Street”.
Slinfold was an extremely industrious place and the remains of the iron industry is still in evidence in the locality of Roman Woods. There were other traditional industries such as basket-making, brickworks, a tanyard and a timber yard. One of the most important local industries was the quarrying of Horsham Stone. The quarries are now exhausted but at one time enormous pieces of Horsham Stone were provided to build pavements all over Sussex and elsewhere, also for roofing.
In the village is a primary school and St. Peter’s church, which was built around 1861. The Red Lyon pub in the heart of the village serves very good, locally sourced food. The village is also home to one of the oldest Cricket Clubs in West Sussex, established in 1775. There is also a village Tennis Club and Concert Band.
